Mining for value in the Napa Valley: Over 20 of the best wines for under $75
Decanter's Napa correspondent Jonathan Cristaldi does a lot of tasting each year, with the preponderance of it in the Napa Valley, a place known for its wines and their higher price tags. Here he offers readers a lengthy selection of more than 20 bottles that support the notion that the valley's signature reputation can still be had for an attainable price point.

That this is a list should come as no surprise. The title, dear reader, gives it away. What matters most, however, is what you do with it.
The search for value in Napa Valley is not a fool’s errand; it can still be done!
As someone who has written wine recommendation lists for years across various publications, I’ve found they usually fall into one of two camps: wonderfully practical and helpful, or gloriously hedonistic and almost useless.
Scroll down for Jonathan’s best value Napa wines under $75
What I can promise is this: I’ve tasted every wine on this list, rated it, and logged each one into Decanter’s online reviews. These are wines worth your attention – delicious, even enviable.
Not that I envy a wine for simply being wine; rather, I imagine consumers envying those fortunate enough to already own or drink them.
Still, take a cue from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1933 advice to his 11-year-old daughter: ‘Don’t worry about anybody getting ahead of you – worry about efficiency [and, intriguingly, ‘horsemanship’ – Ed.].’
Efficiency matters here because you do need to worry about wines that have become impossible to find. At the time of publication, each wine is still available directly from the winery.

Though, I can’t guarantee you’ll find these in local retail shops or restaurants, especially if you live outside the US
But let’s say you reside in a fashionable London neighbourhood, a posh Parisian arrondissement, or near a charming enoteca in Dogliani in Piedmont – print this list, hand it to your local wine buyer, and demand they import as many as possible.
The task ahead
Because here’s the truth: finding excellent Napa Valley wine that travels beyond Napa, that you can drink now, and that costs under $75 a bottle, is no small feat. (And yes, I fully expect my inbox to fill with suggestions for other sub-$75 wines I’ve missed, forgotten, or couldn’t squeeze in.)
But remember my caveat. These wines must:
- The wine must be available outside of Napa Valley.
- It must be excellent, more than a casual ‘sure, I’ll have a glass.’ These are bottles you’ll want to finish to the last drop. At least, I do.
Napa Valley has around 475 physical wineries and over 1,000 brands, so a list of 25 is but a drop in the proverbial bucket.
Wallace Stevens found 13 ways of looking at a blackbird; I’ve found 25 Napa wines under $75 in the past six months that are as enticing as they sound.
Here they are – from whites to reds.

Paula Kornell, Blanc de Noirs, Napa Valley, California, USA, 2020

Paula Kornell debuted her namesake brand in 2017 in homage to her father, Hanns Kornell, who, in 1958, began producing Méthode Champenoise techniques on California grapes from his Larkmead Estate winery. Paula began working with her dad at Kornell Champagne Cellars in 1982, so her own label has been a long time coming. Scotland native Robin Akhurst, leveraging the Méthode Champenoise, is making some of the best sparkling wine that is Napa Valley appellated. The 2020 release of Paula Kornell is terrifically fresh with stark minerality and building in richness with French pastry, almond cream, and golden cherries. From the lively and persistent, rich and creamy mousse come notes of acacia, Granny Smith apple, and buttered brioche, finishing bone dry even at 8.0g/L, with crispy and zippy acid tension. Harvested between 17 and 31 August 2020, with tirage on 1 February 2021 and disgorged on 15 January 2023. Number nine of my top 10 wines of 2023.

Antinori Napa Valley, A26 Chardonnay, Napa Valley, California, USA, 2023

A much cooler vintage than the 2022, with nearly three weeks difference in pick dates, and it is quitea lovely wine showing such a puirty of wet slate minerality that lifts out of the glass nuanced by bright white flowers, limey brightness with lemony richness and long nuanced character of crushed almonds with more wildflower notes of jasmine and more wet rock minerality carrying the lengthy, slightly sipcy and clean finish. There's a coolness and complexity to this white that you can’t put the glass down. You want to keep smelling over and over, and before you know it, the bottle is gone and only the scent of orchard fruit, wildflowers, and wet slate lingers in your glass.

AXR, Ganzin Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley, California, USA, 2023

This 100% Sauvignon Blanc was fermented entirely in puncheons and aged in 30% new French oak. Winemaker Jean Hoefliger notes that the ratio of juice to wood is optimal, imparting layers and complexity while preserving the fruit's vibrancy. Lifted, heady notes of sea spray, apricot, and lemon cream, with a hint of straw grass, build on the medium-bodied palate, boasting a chalky minerality and robust acidity core. The length is remarkable, offering exceptional staying power for a Sauvignon Blanc. These AXR whites are so much brighter in 2023, dictated by the cool vintage. Ganzin is the Reserve level of AXR’s Sauvignon Blanc program and is a reference to vine breeder Victor Ganzin, who established the AXR1 rootstock in 1879.

Gamble Estates, Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley, Yountville, California, USA, 2024

The winemaker selects fruit either by clonal selection or as block selections, employing whole-cluster pressing, followed by overnight settling in the cellar before fermentation in a mix of 225-litre barrels, cigar barrels, and puncheons. The wine is aged on the lees for six months in 15% new French oak. This marks the first time Gamble has barrel-fermented its Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from the Riverbound Vineyard in Yountville. Bright and highly expressive, it bursts with pithy lime, lemon, citrus zest, lemon oil, delicate orange blossom and vibrant minerality. A firm spine of crunchy acidity provides exceptional integration and tension, while a wonderfully grippy texture builds through the finish, making this wine remarkably fresh and invigorating. As of 2022, the portfolio has been simplified, with new labels highlighting estate-grown fruit under the Gamble family. The winery name has changed from Gamble Family Vineyards to Gamble Estates, reflecting the diversity of their vineyard sources. The C.C. Ranch Estate spans 34 hectares, planted south of Quintessa and leading down to the Honig Estate, all within the Rutherford AVA.

Matthiasson, White Wine, Napa Valley, California, USA, 2022

A blend of 46% Sémillon, 29% Ribolla Gialla, 23% Sauvignon Blanc, and 2% Tocai Friulano. This wine is bright and zesty, offering candied mineral notes, acacia honey, and Meyer lemon peel on the nose. Medium-bodied with a consistent flavour profile, the palate delivers more of the same vibrant character, accented by an abundance of chalky minerals on the long, refreshing finish. These wines, from Steve Matthiasson, are built for long-term cellaring, and it would be just your luck to forget about a few bottles and try them 10, 15, or 20 years after first purchasing, assuming you kept them in good condition in a cool, dark place.

The Napa Valley Chardonnay is a blend sourced from vineyards in Oak Knoll and Carneros, with up to 50% coming from the Haire Vineyard in Carneros. Crafted with 100% whole cluster pressing, native yeast, and malolactic fermentation in barrels, it is aged on the lees for 11 months in 33% new French oak, with no racking. It is medium-bodied with natural freshness and provides excellent balance and support for the rich fruit weight. S. R. Tonella Cellars, Reserve Sémillon, Rutherford, California, USA, 2022

This single-vineyard Sémillon comes from the 3-acre (1.2ha) J.J. Ponti‑Tonella Vineyard, grown on the eastern benchlands north of Skellenger Lane, where these Château d’Yquem clones have taken root. Fermented in equal parts low-impact new French oak and stainless steel, the wine is strikingly expressive, with sea-spray acidity and a rich vinous character. Aromatics of salted Meyer lemon peel, lime zest, and bright white flowers lead into a medium-bodied palate, layered with salty crushed-stone minerality. There’s impressive staying power, driven by both the richness of the fruit and the wine’s underlying mineral tension.

Twomey, Napa/Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc, California, USA, 2024

Fragrant guava, passion fruit, seagrass, and smoky minerality lift from the glass, complemented by a savoury, just-picked pop of tarragon. Medium-bodied, with plump, juicy fruit on the palate, the wine is framed by a firm spine of racy acidity and finishes long on a chalky, mineral note. That palate-coating tropical fruit character lingers well beyond the saline-mineral thread’s graceful resolution. One of the most delicious and structured Sauvignon Blancs I’ve tasted from Twomey. Aged in French oak puncheons and barrels, stainless steel drums, and concrete, the blend includes 1% Semillon.

Kanpai Wines, Hi No Tori Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll, California, USA, 2021

From the Meadowbrook Farm estate vineyard (historically a source for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, Robert Mondavi, Joseph Phelps, and Opus One) located in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Crafted by Steve Matthiasson, the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes were aged 18 months in 30% new oak. So fresh and inviting at first whiff. From its ruby-coloured core comes bright and fragrant blood orange, white cherry, cranberry and white pepper with hints of cedar. Medium-bodied and teeming with energy. Robert Foley Vineyards, Charbono, Napa Valley, California, USA, 2021

Bob Foley explains that Inglenook once had Charbono planted thanks to André Tchelistcheff, whom Georges de Latour brought to Napa Valley to make wine. Tchelistcheff, familiar with two blocks of Charbono in Calistoga, advised keeping the variety to blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, which would help moderate the alcohol levels. Charbono rarely accumulates sugar beyond 22–23° Brix, resulting in naturally low alcohol potential. Foley, who knew Tchelistcheff for about a decade, credits him with recognising Charbono’s value and helping prevent its removal from the valley. Today, Foley sources his Charbono from Shypoke Vineyard in Calistoga, farmed by Gary Heitz at the base of Sterling. He admits that the first thing he does is eat the grapes, describing them as delicious, before fermenting them in open-top vessels and ageing the wine for 18 months in neutral French oak prior to bottling. The finished wine offers a bright, savoury nose of cassis and black cherry, layered with tobacco, black pepper, and loamy earth and pressed wildflowers. Medium-bodied, it features silken tannins, a firm spine of juicy blood-orange acidity, and hints of brown baking spices with ironstone minerality on the long finish. With its modest alcohol and vibrant acidity, this Charbono is a particularly versatile match for Asian cuisine.

Smith-Madrone, Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, Spring Mountain, California, USA, 2021

From brothers Stu and Charlie Smith comes their 2021 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain, a precise blend of 81.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.7% Cabernet Franc, and 0.4% Petit Verdot. Aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak, with only 1,652 cases produced, this wine showcases the meticulous dry farming of their 15.4-hectare vineyard at a 579-metre elevation, with vines dating back to 1971. The 2021 vintage is yet another testament to their mastery, offering a purity and elegance that define these Cabernets, with impeccable structure for long-term cellaring. In 2021, the tannins are firm, soaring, built like sky-scrapers, yet remarkably well-integrated. The nose offers a beautiful black cherry and red currant potpourri, mingling with pressed wildflowers, sage, capsicum, and tobacco leaf. Juicy plum fruit intertwines with a graphite minerality, and while there’s notable density to the fruit, a fine backbone of crunchy acidity imparts a stunning lightness and lift.
